Toews and Kane Gives Hope to ‘Hawks

Toews KaneHas anyone been watching the Chicago Blackhawk games lately?

This team is a perfect example as to how being league bottom dwellers for so many years can be beneficial in the long run. (For more examples, look at the Pittsburgh Penguins)

If you look at this Chicago team, there are two players who stand out. And both of them are rookies.

That’s right. 2007 first overall pick Patrick Kane and 2006 third overall pick Jonathan Toews.

And what a difference they are making for this Blackhawks team. Okay, maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Chicago is fourth in their division, BUT they are eighth in the Western Conference standings. The other teams in their div who are ahead of them are St.Louis, Columbus and Detroit. Wow, what a difference in the West so far eh?

Kane and Toews brings one thing to this youth movement in the Windy City: hope.

Kane currently leads the team with 16 points (5G, 11A), and has been Chicago’s best offensive threats. Toews, on the other hand, is ranked second in NHL history for the longest point streak to begin an NHL career. The Winnipeg native has at least a point in his first 10 games, as he has recorded five goals and five assists. Not bad for the first seasons, for both these players.

This team not only have these two young sensations on their squad, but they have a great supporting cast. Tuomo Ruutu and Patrick Sharp are beginning to revolve around these guys and produce on the scoreboard, while offseason acquisition Robert Lang gives the much needed veteran presence and production. Jason Williams, who is second on the team in points, is also adding to the offensive tallies of this Chicago team, while Sergei Samsonov rounds out this surprisingly talented top-seven.

Havlat ChicagoDon’t forget Martin Havlat, who is currently out with an injury. Once healthy, this is what Chicago’s top three lines could possibly look like:

Williams – Lang – Havlat

Ruutu – Toews – Kane

Samsonov – Perreault – Sharp

If these players really start hitting stride, look for the Blackhawks goal-for stats to rise dramatically. Especially with rising stars on defense such as Brent Seabrook, Duncan Keith and James Wisniewski, this team has a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.

However, the biggest ‘IF’ comes in the form of goaltending, as Nikolai Khabibulin or Patrick Lalime must keep the puck out. Either one of them has to return to their old winning form. Simple as that.

Message to the league: Watch out for Chicago, they aren’t an easy two points anymore.

  1. “This is talent to bring a franchise back from dead.” A great quote by the announcer on Toew’s amazing goal…

This is quite a combo, to be sure! Don’t know if they’ll make the playoffs, but they will certainly be a big step up from last season!
